PUPPY MENU
Puppy Headstart Classes
Item# 200371 -
$40.00 |
Puppy Socialization and environmental enrichment. Many pet professionals believe the benefits of puppy classes outweigh the
risk of infectious disease. "How and why we changed our puppy classes at Legacy" is because the onset and offset of critical
periods in a puppy's development are many and varied. It's important that puppies have access immediately to thoughtful,
safe classes.
This seminar offers a seven category "menu" of learning experiences presented as an ongoing drop-in class.
Puppies are allowed in class as early as the client's veterinarian will permit. It's common to have seven-week-old pups in
class. "Having a Puppy Kindergarten" or "Puppy Headstart" class enables puppies to accept varied elements of his or her
environment. Many aspects of a dog's personality are governed by experiences before sixteen weeks of age. The Puppy Menu
class provides experiences in seven different categories. The video begins with live video of an actual "Puppy Headstart"
class with young puppies and their owners. Some are experiencing their first visit. Lecture follows explaining the puppy
class objectives, experiences, and training tools for young puppies. Sequim, WA 2004

Two part video on the important concepts of dog trainers: role of nature and nurture, instinctive drift, play = brain food
for dogs, body language. Social hierarch: what it is, what it isn't, meta signals, leadership (or guardianship, or parenting
or teaching - which is it???) Predispositions: breed type, fixed action patterns, agonistic behavior. Three biologic
categories of behavior, the food-acquisition sequence and what it means to trainers. Other factors influencing
"temperament". Cerebral cortex and limbic systems of the brain, offensive and defensive dogs. Critical distance via the
sliding board and traffic light analogy. Body Language: how dogs shout, how they whisper. Stress: identification in social
settings, training and home alone. Observing behavior "clusters".

Terry continues to tweak her original Toolbox, first published by Howell in 1995. For the last 30 years, the Toolbox has
been Legacy's basis for addressing unwanted behavior. Four foundation blocks and eight specific tools (or ingredients) are
presented and then considered as possibilities to create a program (or recipe) for various problems from the audience. Using
the Toolbox as a framework, the specific behaviors of inappropriate barking and inappropriate elimination will be defined
and addressed.
About Aversives is based on research from Sidman, Skinner, Breland, and Bailey and her own extensive
experience. Terry talks about the possible "fallout" or "baggage" that can accompany aversives. What are the critical
components for aversives if they are to be applied properly and why they are seldom called for. She talks about
alternatives. The use of some common and not-so common training tools and equipment will be addressed.

Video of a live interview with an actual Legacy Client. Terry takes the history and consults with the client. Later the Dog
Sense Class discusses and evaluates the case history. Important questions to ask yourself or owners of a "problem" dog and
how the answers can help assess the situation and help guide your program development.

OUTWITTING DOGS
Item# B1040 -
$25.00 |
|
 |
Terry Ryan and Kirsten Mortensen
Training dogs has traditionally
been done by using negative reinforcement and brute force. Take the choke
collar as an example. But the tide is turning, and Terry Ryan,
world-renowned dog trainer, is at the forefront of a revolution. Outwitting
Dogs draws on her twenty-five years of hands-on experience helping people
understand dogs, train dogs, and solve dog behavior problems using kinder,
gentler methods. Outwitting Dogs uses more brain than brawn to motivate dog
behavior with positive training techniques and helps readers truly
understand the minds of their canine friends (and even enemies).
Not only will you learn how to
outwit and housetrain puppies, but you'll also find techniques to cure:
-
the chronic chewer
-
the dog who won't come
-
the leash puller
-
the dog who barks too much
-
the dog who jumps on people
-
the biter
-
the dog who hates to be left alone
-
the aggressor
You'll even learn how to outwit the neighbor's dog, teach your own dog
tricks, outwit dog trainers, outwit dogs and kids at the same time, and much
more. No sensible dog owner will want to be without a copy. |

Terry says training time can be fun times. There is life beyond block healing! Games are a part of every class and every
workshop I conduct. I’m developing new games all the time. I make them up as I go along and I encourage you to do the same!
This book is a continuation of the collection of games that began in Games People Play To Train Their Dogs.
It has more than
forty new activities. As motivational training methods become increasingly more popular, instructors are finding that training
games are a fun and effective addition to obedience classes. |

THE BARK STOPS HERE
Item# B1019 -
$9.95 |
|

58 page booklet |
If you’re a fan of 60’s music, you’ll remember the Tremeloes song, “Silence is Golden”. The lyrics imply that silence is
sought after, but not easy to obtain. The quest for gold is rarely straightforward. Helping your dog be quiet isn’t either.
Creativity and lateral thinking are paramount to success.
Rather than punishing a noisy dog, owners can learn a variety of
alternative methods for successfully dealing with the problem. The Bark Stops Here is not a step-by-step recipe book for
silence. Nor is it totally scientific. At times it borders on being anthropromorphic. Dogs probably don’t think in human terms
as The Bark Stops Here might imply. If they did, they’d be taking mental notes for their next book on human training. They’re
different, and knowing those differences enhances our relationship. This book’s strength is in giving owners insight as to why
their dogs are barking and information on some behavior modification and management techniques to deal with it. Appropriately.
Realistically. Humanely. |

Puppies are impressionable. As in human child development, early experiences can influence a
pup's current and future outlook on life. Windows of learning opportunities are opening and closing at a rapid rate. Take
advantage of these critical periods by providing an enriched but non-frightening learning environment. This CD will help get
your puppy used to a variety of everyday sounds. |
